A Letter to my Governor
A Letter to Governor Kasich
B. E. Smith
September 1, 2017
Dear Governor Kasich,
I read an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer about your approach to healthcare. The article was originally from Deirdre Shesgreen of USA Today. I agree with your “bipartisan and pragmatic” approach to healthcare which I consider to be one of the most, if not the most important issue, in our political agenda.
My wife, Harriet, and I are life-time Democrats. We first voted for a Democrat in 1956–Adlai Stevenson. We’ve been voting for Democrats ever since and are likely to continue to do so in the future.
By the way, I have run this letter by Harriet and she agrees with it, so you now have at least two Democrats in Morrow, Ohio (zip code 45152) who agree with what you are saying now.
That’s actually pretty good progress, I imagine.
Your bipartisan approach to healthcare with Governor Hickenlooper, a Democrat from Colorado, is admirable. We need more of that. Democrats and Republicans, working together to provide Americans with the best possible healthcare at reasonable rates that anyone, one way or the other, can afford.
I don’t think healthcare should be a profitable venture but don’t get me wrong, I believe in capitalism and competition and all that. It’s just that I think everyone, rich and poor, old, and young and anyone in between deserves good health care. No one should be turned away from their effort to see a doctor or a trauma center because they cannot pay for it.
Insurance companies deserve the right to make a profit but not at the expense of sacrificing healthcare when it is needed. Another thing about insurance companies, they have proven to me that they must be tightly regulated or they will put profits before healthcare. Not good.
You and Governor Hickenlooper are to be commended for your bipartisan approach. If you run for President in 2020, I may just vote for you and Harriet probably will too, even if you are Republican. (Don’t count on that vote too soon because if the Democrats come up with a good candidate and a good message, I will probably stick with my lifetime habit of voting Democratic.)
Here are some bullets from Deirdre Shesgreen’s article that we really like:
• Preserve and strengthen key elements of Obamacare
• Keep the individual mandate, which requires most Americans to purchase insurance
• Guarantee the federal government will pay subsidies that offer plans with lower deductibles and copays for low income individuals
• Continue the federal government’s efforts to promote enrollment in Obamacare
I see where six other governors are in support of your efforts on healthcare. We need to get some Congressmen on board too. Emphasis on bipartisanship and fixing, not replacing , Obamacare. I am sharing this letter with some of my best friends, Republicans, and Democrats alike. I am asking them to share this letter with their friends and their Congressmen to help you continue your momentum on this issue and supporting bipartisan politics on healthcare.
Thanks for your effective leadership as Governor of Ohio. We need more politicians like you.
Sincerely,
Bob and Harriet Smith
Morrow, Ohio, 45152
