Reagan, the Democrat
We did have a distinguished ancestor. My grandmother’s cousin Hannibal Hamlin was Abraham Lincoln’s vice president in his first term.
He was a Democrat who was against slavery and Lincoln hoped he could bring the votes of other like-minded Democrats and it worked.
Yes, I knew Reagan was a long time Democrat. It wasn’t so much that he changed parties, but that the parties changed philosophy. There was no place left in the Democrat party for a conservative.
When he changed parties, so did most of the conservatives in Texas. Reagan birthed the Republican part in Texas. Until then we could meet in someone’s living room here in Lubbock.
Our high school classmate, Frank Cahoon rode his coattails to become the first Republican to be elected to the state legislature since Reconstruction days.
