Did You Know? 5/7/2018
World War II was nearing an end in Europe but Japan was fighting on. On April 12, 1945, Harry Truman, Vice President of the United States, was working in the Capitol building when he got an urgent call to come to the White House immediately. When he got there just minutes later, Eleanor Roosevelt met him at the door. “The President is dead,” she said. Truman was stunned. The weight of the world suddenly fell on his shoulders.
At his inauguration, he had never even heard of an atomic bomb and yet less than four months later, he found himself responsible for using or not the most horrific weapon ever known to mankind. Truman made the decision to release two atomic weapons on Japan which brought about their unconditional surrender.
Do you think Truman was justified in releasing these weapons? Should we use them today?
